The Sulphate Sensation

Anonymous asked my opinion on sulphate-free shampoos and which ones specifically I recommend.

Sulphates are evil, evil things!  These harsh cleaning agents are great for stripping built-up product off your strands, but also for stripping color right from em.  Although they are not the only aggressor against your colored locks (also blame UV rays, heat, volumizing products, and chlorine), they are definitely the most forceful.

Sulphate free shampoos are fantastic for preserving hair color, or at least helping to.  You’re not gonna get the bubbly goodness (these compounds are what cause the extreme lather in other shampoos), but neither are you gonna be the victim of dull, lusterless hair.

For any hair color: Try One ‘n Only Argan Oil Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner.  You can read my review of these wonderful products here.

As an alternative, try a color-depositing or color-enhancing shampoo.  Although these contain sulphates, they work to counteract the color-stripping effect by adding in a bit of semi-permanent dye to amp up your color and help it last longer.  Some even include light reflecting particles to make your hair look shinier and healthier.  The only ones I recommend, though, are:

For blondes: Shimmer Lights Original Conditioning Shampoo and Conditioner

For brunettes: Quantum Beautiful Browns Color Replenishing Shampoo and Conditioner

For redheads: Quantum Riveting Reds Color Replenishing Shampoo and Conditioner

With all of these, leave both products in for at least two minutes before rinsing to really allow their depositing properties to kick in.  All of the products mentioned here can be bought at Sally Beauty Supply.
